The cone.
[Update: Moments after this post was published, we received word that a new eruption is underway in the vicinity of Keilir.]
The volcanic plug Keilir (lit. cone in Icelandic) in Reykjanes is currently in the news. Over the past week, an earthquake swarm centred in the area has been rocking southwest Iceland. The tremors have jolted Reykjavík and the surrounding region. Magma is on the move, sloshing around in the subterranean tunnels. An eruption is very likely and geologists surmise that a fissure will open up near Keilir should magma breach the surface.
In the first image, Keilir basks in the warm glow of the December sun which stays close to the horizon at this time of the year. Faxaflói bay and the mountains of Snæfellsnes are seen in the distance.
Keilir is seen here from Meradalir. To the bottom left is the outgassing lava from last year’s eruption. The winter light in Iceland is pure delight for the senses.
The next image was taken from the Grænadynjga area.
Keilir looms behind Bessastaðir, the official residence of the President of Iceland.
What a magnificient Country my friend despite Mother Nature’s interference. The solitude, the expanse, the mystery….just wonderful my friend!
Thank you, Dan.
” Magma is on the move, sloshing around in the subterranean tunnels…”, when you describe the nature around you in Iceland, your words become poetic! Beautiful photos…thank you Rajan sir!
Sarmila: Thanks.
That second photo is breath-takingly stunning. Are you planning aerial views of the upcoming eruption, should it occur?
Bob: Moments before we were to take off in the helicopter the authorities shut down the airspace. I don’t know when/if I will go now.
ohh! wonderful!
