Ljótipollur Crater Lake

A study in light.

The phenomenon of an object changing its appearance with the direction and angle of light is well known. Very few places offer this experience on a macro scale as dramatically as the great outdoors of Iceland. The three images of Ljótipollur below, taken on three separate occasions, illuminate the point splendidly.

Ljótipollur means “ugly puddle” in Icelandic and the crater lake is one of the highlights in the south-central Highlands. Likely it wasn’t a pretty sight to the earliest settlers who ventured into the area. Today, however, it is strikingly beautiful.
