Fjallsjökull

Three encounters.

Fjallsjökull is one of the outlet glaciers descending from Öræfajökull, on the southern edge of the main ice cap, Vatnajökull. Seen from ground level, its scale is difficult to grasp. From the air, the glacier reveals an altogether different geometry – ice flowing around dark ridges of volcanic rock, folding itself into the landscape below.

The final view restores the human scale: a vehicle on Iceland‘s only road around the island, and an immense wall of ice ahead.
