Ready to erupt?
In the past few days a swarm of earthquakes has been recorded on Öræfajökull, one of the most feared glacial volcanoes in Iceland. Geologists monitoring the activity are currently on their toes, uncertain if this signals an imminent eruption.
A distinct feature of Öræfajökull is the Hvannadalshnjúkur peak, Iceland‘s highest point at 2110 metres. These aerials from last December depict the illumination of the peak during our circle around it moments before sunset. It is a time of the year when the sun barely rises above the southern horizon.
