Ganesh Chaturthi 2022

Festival greetings to all.

Tomorrow millions of Hindus around the world will welcome into their homes the most beloved Ganesha: embodiment of intellect and wisdom, repository of the Arts & Sciences, musician extraordinaire, (vegetarian) gourmand nonpareil, and an overall great guy to have around.

Shloka and translation provided by Dr. V.N. Muthukumar.
Verse from Gaṅeśabhujaṅga, a hymn attributed to Adi Shankaracharya, ca. 7th CE.

He is pleased by the tinkling of small bells and
a lotus in His hand, with its stalk upright, moves –
keeping time to His playful dance;
A glistening snake as a garland
around
His sloping belly;
the Lord of the gaṅās, the Son of Śiva,
Him, I praise!

I photographed this alcove in one of the bylanes of Varanasi in 2007.
