Ganeshas Taking Shape

Traditional artists at work.

The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is just around the corner and artists in Goa are imparting finishing touches to their Ganeshas. The celebrations begin on September 5 when the idols will be installed in Hindu homes all over Goa for the 2-day festivities.

I visited three traditional artists over the past week. The art of making Ganesha idols has run in their families for generations.

PS: Has anyone noticed that Ganesha in recent years has lost some pounds and acquired a bit of muscle? What happened to the Lambodara of yesteryear?
