Vilasini Ravul was working the paddy field in the village of Talarna in north Goa when I asked her to pose for a portrait. These are rural folk, not accustomed to having a lens pointed at them, and she was understandably shy and nervous at the same time. I tried to make some small talk to put her at ease while I fired off some frames, but it wasn’t happening. Finally in exasperation I said, “Haans mugo!” (Smile, lady!) and it had the desired effect.
