Women in the Jungle

Portraits from rural Goa.

Met these two while meandering in Canacona, Goa. They were heading into the jungle for work – farming, looking after cows, clearing brush, gathering firewood, the kind of work that requires exertion of limbs. Life for these folk begins early in the morning with a breakfast of ‘ambil’ (porridge made from millet).

They have no smartphone, and therefore no TikTok to go on to whine about a 9-to-5 job and how there’s no gym available in the jungle. I doubt they have a stock portfolio or a Bitcoin wallet. Next time I will be sure to ask them about ‘gender equality.’

These women are not accustomed to having lenses pointed at them and it takes some small talk to put them at ease.

The Faces of Goa collection.

PS: Both of them had the same first & last name, and were distinguished by their husband’s names.
