Portrait of a farmer.
Guðmundur Þorsteinsson – “Mundi” – lived at the Finnbogastaðir farm in Trékyllisvík, a tiny settlement in Strandir, Westfjords of Iceland.
Blessed with a rugged coastline, dramatic mountains, and picturesque bays, this remote area embraces great natural beauty and quiet. But with these benisons also come isolation and brutal weather. The long and dark winters, exacerbated by frigid northerly winds, make for a very hard life, more so for a farmer.
Mundi came from a generation of hardy Icelanders, now fast receding. He passed away last year on December 2. These portraits were taken in 2015.
A couple of images of Mundi‘s neighbourhood.
Amazing pics and all that they reveal !!!
Much character in that gentleman’s face my friend! Great tones and wonderful exposure. LOve all the Winter scenes and so well done. Love the twilight image of the house with the house light on! Wonderful!
Dan
Thank you, Dan.
Expressive portraits.
Looks like an independent man. And sadly they are disappearing everywhere.
Richard
Thanks, Richard. Yes, these are tough men from a stock that is now dwindling.
A fitting tribute to a stoic Icelander.
Thank you, Bob. (Thanks also for the suggestion on toning.)
