Old Panjim was a unique synthesis of Portuguese elegance and old world Goan charm. A few establishments, secured in period properties not yet torn down to make way for ugly Indian-era concrete, still hold on to the spirit of an earlier time. For the most part they are run by the descendants of the founding merchants.
