The abandoned bay of Vöðlavík in the East Fjords region of Iceland was the locale of the most challenging rescue operation in the history of the US Air Force. An Icelandic fishing vessel Goðinn went down in a raging storm on January 10, 1994, condemning the stranded crew to almost certain death. The details of the rescue are recounted here.
