Women of Colour

A surprise encounter.

An unplanned whistle-stop in the village of Khetolai in Rajasthan in 2007 lead me to these women and children of the Meghwal caste.

It took a good deal of persuasion to get them to pose. This was (still is?) an old, insulated world where the women are not accustomed to interacting with strangers especially in the absence of – and without permission from – their menfolk. Some of them made bold to lift their veil but I had a very brief window before they retreated.

Who knows, maybe they are all on Facebook now.
