Rescue on Mjóafjarðarheiði

Car stuck in snow.

On the wintery morning of November 09, 2013, we were attempting an excursion to the beautiful fjord of Mjóifjörður in the East Fjords region of Iceland when we came across a stranded local. He had set out on a ptarmigan hunt (permitted a few times a year) but hadn’t gotten very far on a very lonely Mjóafjarðarheiði.

As it turned out, the amount of snow rendered the route impassable even for our modifed superjeep. Mjóifjörður (population ~35) remains cut off from the rest of the country during the winter months and a boat ride around the fjord to the neighbouring Seyðisfjörður is the only point of access.
