Loðmundarfjörður

Abandoned fjord in Iceland’s remote east.

The 7 kms long Loðmundarfjörður was home to 143 inhabitants in 1860 but by 1973 that number had dwindled to zero. Getting to this lovely fjord over land is not easy; access is via a rough gravel route best negotiated in a sturdy 4×4.
