PS: The red is due to ferrous oxides and other minerals. It is not an uncommon sight in this interior volcanic wonderland.

Intensely dramatic and powerful. A violent gash has spewed blood harkening back to the days of Vikings with double handed swords and chain mail. Superb.

What a red! Is it all lichen? Do you have photographs from any closer? Reminds me of your Death Valley pics (and less famously, mine), with all the mineral deposits and washes.
