River Mining

Destroying rivers, one sand grain at a time.

Sand required to service the construction boom in Goa is mined from rivers. While the scenes make for compelling photographic compositions, the activity is destructive to the riverine ecosystem.

These images on River Chapora were taken in 2007. Sand mining was declared illegal in 2011 following environmental concerns but the crooks in power keep trying to find ways around the prohibition.
