Legends of Silicon Valley: Donald Knuth

Sage of Silicon Valley.

The legendary computer scientist and professor at Stanford University, Donald Knuth, has spent his entire intellectual life searching for patterns in theoretical computer science, making fundamental contributions in a wide range of topics, and then clarifying them in his magnum opus, The Art of Computer Programming, work on which began in 1962 and is still ongoing. In the realm of practical applications, he is the creator of the widely used typesetting system TeX. Professor Knuth also has an abiding passion for music and is proficient on the pipe organ.

I met the professor yesterday morning at his home in Palo Alto, California. Not only had he heard of Goa, he also recalled some of its history. I asked him if he had been to India. He said no, but that he felt transported to India every time he watched a Satyajit Ray movie.

Professor Knuth stopped using email on January 1, 1990.
