Dettifoss, located within Jökulsárgljúfur National Park in north Iceland, is said to be the most powerful waterfall in Europe. At 44 metres high, 100 metres wide, and a volume discharge that averages over 200 cubic metres/s, it is a tremendous sight. There are far more beautiful waterfalls elsewhere in Iceland but none as earth-shaking.
On this morning at Dettifoss, the lighting conditions were terrible for landscape photography (think sun, glare, scattered high clouds), at variance with the type of photograph I had envisioned. But you learn quickly in Iceland that the only certainty as regards weather is that it won’t be what you want it to be. I had to work with the hand dealt to me. What I finally did manage to capture conveys well the character of this thundering behemoth.
